The Pirate party – this theme is becoming regular for the BDSM nightclub Iznanka. And no wonder why. So this time our pirate party was special. I had a pirate hat on my head. During my preparations for this Saturday, I came across an interesting article about pirates and their customs. Despite being slippery robbers, they still had their own system of rewards and punishments. Some of these punishments are very similar to BDSM practices, at least visually. Let’s take a whipping, for instance. Otherwise, it was called the Law of Moses. During the Golden Age of piracy, this was a very common punishment. Usually, 39 or 40 lashes were imposed. In fact, this meant the death penalty. According to the Old Testament, 40 lashes were enough to take the life of a person. To punish with 40 lashes, as Pontius Pilate was considered inappropriate when 39 were enough for the punished to die. The captain or the team, depending on the gravity of the crime, could impose less number of lashes. Such a verdict was appropriate to show humanism. Despite the fact that this punishment has such a biblical background, the tradition itself came from ancient Rome. In those days, in Rome, if after 40 lashes the convicted stayed alive, he had the right to kill the torturer. So, you know, these 40 lashes usually became fatal.

Or, the cat – a whip with nine tails woven at the handle, with metal balls or blades attached to the ends of those tails. This was a very cruel weapon. The whip was kept dry and had many bacteria on it. After the punishment, the body of the criminal was disinfected with salt. In those days, corporal punishment was widespread in the merchant marine and navy. The cat even received the slang name – captain’s daughter. Nowadays the cat has a different appearance. A whip with nine or more tails, with knots, brushes or other things on the ends.

Hanging by one’s foot

This torture has been widespread throughout the world since ancient times. Of course, it was in the arsenal of the Brotherhood of the Pirates. The victim was hung by the legs upside down so that blood flowed from the legs to the upper body. All the blood flowed slowly to the head, where it stagnated and caused swelling of the brain. Then a severe headache developed. The world went dark before the victim’s eyes, and blood began to ooze from his nose.
Keeping in mind the duration of the torture, you still need to be able to tie the legs properly for the convicted not to slip out. You understand what associations all these suspension elements evoke in me.
By the way, when I hang my models by their feet, I do it for a very short time. Firstly, it really hurts, and not every model can stand it, although you can practice. Secondly, if you hang upside down for a long time it`s true that the world can go dark before your eyes and make you feel dizzy.

The pirates were quite the bondagists!

I noticed that the pirates enjoyed and knew how to tie people up properly. They tied the delinquent (or prisoner) by the arms or legs and threw him overboard. Then they dragged him behind the ship until the poor guy choked, froze or became a snack for the sharks.
Or, a prisoner with his hands tied and his eyes blindfolded stood on a board thrown overboard into the sea. After a while, he fell into the water. Then he either could be drowned or dragged back to the deck. In general, you understood the idea – the pirates were quite the bondagists!
Evidently, I haven’t mentioned all the executions and punishments, with or without binding, used by the pirates. Their imagination was, to put it mildly, sophisticated and cruel. But these utensils reminded me of modern BDSM devices for whipping. It is unnecessary to draw parallels and similarities between a whip and a lash. Everything is clear. The whipping is quite a common punishment in the world of BDSM. By the way, I can also whip the model. This would be her punishment for being late.
